The stock solutions were:

a) 8.5 g KH2PO4, 21.75 g K2HP04, 44.6 g Na2HPO4 x 12H2O, 1.7 g NH4CI dissolved up to 1000 mL bidistilled water.
b) 22.5 g MgSO4 x 7H2O dissolved up to 1000 mL bidistiIIed-water .
c) 27.5 g CaCl2 dissolved up to 1000 mL bidistillled water.
d) 0.25 g FeCl3 x 6H2O dlssolved up to 1000 mL bidlstiIled water.

Three (3) mL each of the stock solutions (a-d) were added up to 1000 mL bidistilled water (final test medium pH adjusted to 7.0).

An amount of sludge fron a domestlc waste-water sewage plant corresponding to 7.5 mg dry material for the positlve control ANILINE and 25.0 mg dry material for the test article were added to 250 mL of the final test medium.

Sanples:
Flask 1: 25O mL bidistilled water and 7.3 mg test article
Flask 2: 25O ml final test medlum, 7.5 mg test article,
Flask 3: 7.4 mg test article,
Flask 4: 7.3 mg test article and 25 mg inoculun.
The pH was adJusted to pH 7.0 before the lnoculum was added.
Flask 13: 25O ml final test redlum, 25 mg ANILINE,
Flask 14: 25 mg ANILINE,
Flask 15: 24 mg ANILINE and 7.5 mg inoculum.
Flask 16: 25O mL flnal test medlum and 25 mg inoculum.

Incubatl on:
Procedure: Inoculated brown glass bottles (500 ml) were lncubated on a BSB 1000 or BSB 501 apparatus (Wissenschaftliche-Technische Werkstätten GmbH, Weilheim/FRG).
Duration: 28 days
Temperature: 25.5 - 27.5°C, Protected from light

Analyses:
Sample preparation:
At the end of the incubation period, samples of about 10 mL from the flasks treated with ACDMA were centrifuged at about 3000g for about 5 minutes and thereafter directly analysed.

T0C-analyses:
T0C-analyses were perforned with the various supernatants, using a Shimadzu 500 TOC-Anal yser.

Cal cul ati ons:
The biodegradability (%BD) was calculated accordlng to the below given formula:

%BD = BOD/(COD or ThOD) x 100%BOD

The valtdtty of the test was evaluated by calculatlon of the biodegradability of the standard compound ANILINE.

Determlnatlon of Theoretlcal Oxygen Demand (ThOD) of ANILINE:
The theoretlcal oxygen demand of ANILINE was 241 mg oxygen per 100 mg ANILINE as calculated from the known molecular weight, assuming the turnover of H into H2O, C into CO2 and N into NH3, accordtng to attachment 2, Directive 84/449 EEC, C.7.

Determlnatlon of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of ACDMA:
The COD was determined according to Directlve 84/49 EEC, C.9.
It was estimated to be 244.94 mg O2/100 mg.
