Principles of method if other than guideline:
Using the HPLC method for the estimation of the partition coefficient (POW) of Na salts of hydrogenated rosin (FORAL NC®).
The decision for the HPLC method was made due to the result of a non GLP preliminary testing (log POW of 5.75 and 7.58, respectively, for two test item signals).

Conclusions:
The log Pow of Na salts hydrogenated rosin was determined to be 6.89 (weighted average mean value)
Executive summary:

The partition coefficient (n-octanol / water) of Na salts of hydrogenated rosin was determined according to the OECD 117 Guideline. The test was performed with a concentration of approx. 200 mg/L of the test material in 75% methanol: 25% water. Samples of the test item were analysed via HPLC on a C18 column with diode array detection. Calibration was performed using seven reference items with known log Pow values. The reference items were measured twice, once before and once after the measurement of the test item. The void time of the HPLC system was determined with sodium nitrate.

For each of the four test item signals, two individuals log Pow values were derived under consideration of the first and second calibration and a mean value was calculated from these individual log Pow values. The values for the fourth signal needed to be extrapolated.

The partition coefficient was determined at 21.9 °C to be 4.51 for the first signal, 5.80 for the second signal, 5.95 for the third signal and 7.80 for the fourth.

The value of the last signal needed to be extrapolated. The weighted average mean value of the log Pow for the test item was calculated to be 6.89.

Description of key information

The partition coefficient (n-octanol / water) of Na salts of hydrogented rosin was determined according to the OECD 117 Guideline. The test was performed with a concentration of approx.. 200 mg/L of the test material in 75% methanol: 25% water. The partition coefficient was determined at 21.9 °C to be 4.51 for the first signal, 580 for the second signal, 5.95 for the third signal and 7.80 for the fourth.

The value of the last signal needed to be extrapolated. The weighted average mean value of the log Pow for the test item was calculated to be 6.89.
