- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study

- 17 February 2016 to 22 March 2016
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- OECD Guideline 301 B (Ready Biodegradability: CO2 Evolution Test)
- Deviations:
- no
- Qualifier:

- Guideline:
- EU Method C.4-C (Determination of the "Ready" Biodegradability - Carbon Dioxide Evolution Test)
- Deviations:

- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Specific details on test material used for the study:
- The test substance is listed as ZEF 6099/100. The test substance, a brown liquid, is the reaction product of C16-C18 and C18 unsaturated fatty acids, with (3,4-epoxycyclohexyl) methyl 3,4-epoxycyclohexylcarboxylate and neodecanoic fatty acid, oxiranylmethylester. The test substance was obtained from the sponsor and was stored at room temperature (16.1 – 20.9°C) in a closed vessel dark and dry.
- Oxygen conditions:
- aerobic
- Inoculum or test system:
- activated sludge, domestic (adaptation not specified)
- Details on inoculum:
- Activated sludge from a biologic sewage treatment plant, treating mostly domestic sewage. The sludge was taken from the activation basin of the ESN (Stadtentsorgung Neustadt) sewage treatment plant, Im Altenschemel, NW-Lachen-Speyerdorf on 19 Feb. 2016.
- Duration of test (contact time):
- 28 d

- Based on:
- TOC
- Initial conc.:
- 27.6 mg/L
- Based on:
- test mat.
- Parameter followed for biodegradation estimation:
- CO2 evolution
- Reference substance:
- aniline
- Key result
- Parameter:
- % degradation (CO2 evolution)
- Value:
- 48
- Sampling time:
- 28 d
- Validity criteria fulfilled:
- yes
- Interpretation of results:
- not readily biodegradable
- Conclusions:
- The test substance is considered as “not readily biodegradable”. The test substance reached 48% biodegradation after 28 d, falling short of the target 60% degradation within 28 d. At the end of the 28 d test, no degradation plateau was reached yet, indicating further biodegradation is possible. Because the test substance is a mixture, the 10-day-window biodegradation target does not apply.

Description of key information
The key study was a CO2 evolution test conducted in accordance with OECD Guideline 301B. Based upon test results (48% degradation in 28 days), the substance was reported as “not readily biodegradable”, below the passing criterion of 60% for ready biodegradability. The degradation rate of 48% in 28 days is evidence of inherent, primary biodegradability (> 20% biodegradation) and significant mineralisation (> 40% degradation). Therefore, the test substance was also reported as "very likely inherently biodegradable".
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Biodegradation in water:
- inherently biodegradable
