The point where a liquid starts to boil is not readily measured by DSC and depends strongly on the experimental conditions. Hence, it is preferable to refer to the onset of evaporation for a given set of experimental conditions. For temperature-sensitive resins such as acrylate resins, polymerization may occur along with or before evaporation and often prevents proper determination of the evaporation point. As the resins are liquid at room temperature, evaporation is measured at supra-ambient temperatures using conventional differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Executive summary:

A study was conducted to determine the boiling point of the test substance according to the conventional differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A sample of ca. 10 mg was loaded in a standard aluminum crucible (40 µL) fitted with a pierced lid. The measurements were conducted at a linear heating rate of 10°C min-1 using commercial DSC equipment (Mettler DSC823e or Q10 from TA Instruments). The DSC cell was flushed with nitrogen gas at a flow rate of 50 mL min-1. Under the study conditions, the boiling point of the test substance was determined to be 183°C (Herssens, 2011).
