Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Analytical purity: 99.9 %
- Lot/batch No.: 301601
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

Phenomena and results from two independent preliminary screening tests, were identical as following:

- the sample was ignited within 2 min

- after removal of ignition the sample did not propagate combustion eighter by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the train within the 2 min

Because of this results it was not necessary to perform a main test in accordance with the used guideline.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
The burning rate test showed that the sample of 1,1-Dimethylurea was ignited within 2 min. After removal of ignition, the sample didn’t propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smoldering along 200 mm of the train within the 2 min. Therefore 1,1-Dimethylurea is not a flammable solid.
Executive summary:

A test with 1,1 -Dimethylurea was carried out according to 33.2.1.4 in "Recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods - Manual of Tests and Criteria (ST/AC.10/11/Rev.5), United Nations (2009)." The test sample was formed to a train by a specified mould. Then one end of the train was burned and the phenomena of combustion and the burning time were observed and recorded.

The burning rate test showed that the sample of 1,1-Dimethylurea was ignited within 2 min. After removal of ignition, the sample did not propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smoldering along 200 mm of the train within the 2 min. Therefore 1,1-Dimethylurea is not a flammable solid.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
disregarded due to major methodological deficiencies
Study period:
February - March 2004
Reliability:
3 (not reliable)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
unsuitable test system
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The test methods are described in another document. This does not impair the conclusion of the test results.
The principles of the test methods including their deviations to the guideline are described in detail in the field "any other information on materials and methods".

1) 1,1 -Dimethylurea could be ignited by the 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the dried substance. Local burning of the melted test substance occured with only minor expansion ("Bewertungszahl 3").

2) 1,1 -Dimethylurea could not be ignited by an open flame hold onto the substance for approx. 10 - 15 seconds ("Bewertungszahl 1"). Only melting of the test substance was observed.

3) 1,1 -Dimethylurea could be ignited when put into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds. The melted test substance burns off quickly ("Bewertungszahl 5").

Also a mixture of potassium nitrate and 1,1 -Dimethylurea showed the same reaction ("Bewertungszahl 5").

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Executive summary:

Three tests were conducted according to guidelines similar to guideline A.10.

1,1 -Dimethylurea was dried before testing. The dried 1,1 -Dimethylurea could be ignited by the 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the dried substance. Local burning of the melted test substance occured with only minor expansion ("Bewertungszahl 3").

In a second test approx. 200 mg of 1,1 -Dimethylurea were put into a flat iron bowl and heated with an open gas flame burner for 10 - 15 seconds. 1,1 -Dimethylurea was melting but could not be ignited ("Bewertungszahl 1").

In a third test approx. 150 mg of 1,1 -Dimethylurea and a 1:1 mixture of potasium nitrate and 1,1 -Dimethylurea were put into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds. 1,1 -Dimethylurea could be ignited and the melted test substance burns off quickly ("Bewertungszahl 5"). Also a mixture of potassium nitrate and 1,1 -Dimethylurea showed the same reaction ("Bewertungszahl 5").

Description of key information

Different tests were carried out in order to estimate the flammability of 1,1-Dimethylurea:

One test was carried out according to 33.2.1.4 in "Recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods - Manual of Tests and Criteria (ST/AC.10/11/Rev.5), United Nations (2009)." The burning rate test showed that the sample of 1,1-Dimethylurea was ignited within 2 min. After removal of ignition, the sample did not propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smoldering along 200 mm of the train within the 2 min. Therefore 1,1-Dimethylurea is not a flammable solid.

In a test according to EG No. 1907/2006 A.10 1,1 -Dimethylurea showed burning rates, that does not lead to classification as highly flammable.

1,1-Dimethylurea is considered to be non highly flammable.

Also three tests were conducted according to guidelines similar to guideline A.10.

1,1 -Dimethylurea was dried before testing. The dried1,1 -Dimethylurea could be ignited by the 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the dried substance.

150 mg of 1,1 -Dimethylurea and a 1:1 mixture of potasium nitrate and 1,1 -Dimethylurea were put into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds.1,1 -Dimethylurea could be ignited and the melted test substance burns off quickly ("Bewertungszahl 5"). Also a mixture of potassium nitrate and 1,1 -Dimethylurea showed the same reaction ("Bewertungszahl 5").
