Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information on environmental fate and behaviour

Administrative data

Endpoint:
additional information on environmental fate and behaviour
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
supporting study
Study period:
1988
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: no guideline followed, well documented study
Justification for type of information:
Use of stannous chloride als parent substance for experiment; measurement of Sn2+ ion (same ion responsible for environment toxicitiy and effects in stannous chloride)

Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Enclosures (C1 (test & control), C2 (test & control)) was installed in a lake. The diameter of the enlosures was 0.78m, the depth was 2m. The enclosures were between 10 and 16 cm in the sediment layer. At the beginn of the test radiolabeled stannous (as chloride) was added.
The radiactivity in the water column (filtered water and particulated matter)material > 0.4µm)) and in the sediment was measuered every two days. On day 21 the enclosure of C2 was open and the enclosure was flushed for three days with lake water, then the enclosure was closed again for measurement radilabeld stannous diffision and scour form sediment layer to the water column.
Via the concentration the partiion coeffivients and the half live time was determined
Whole timeframe of test: 75d
GLP compliance:
no
Type of study / information:
- partition coefficient suspended particle
- partition coefficient sediment trap
- half live time of stannous

Half live time:

For C1 a half life time of 8.1 respective for C2 10.5 days was observed (according to a reaction of first order)

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The half life time of stannous in the water column of the envrionment ist between 8.1 and 10.5 days (depending on the conditions of the water column). In due this half life time is lower than 80d the is no concern for bioaccumulation in the water colum.

The partion coefficient for suspended particle was determined to be 2.9x10°6 and for the sediment trap 9.4 x 10^5.
