Studies on the toxicity to microorganisms are available for two of the four main constituents of Fusel oil.

The key study available for 2 -Methylbutanol (CAS No. 137-32-6) was conducted according to the OECD Guideline 209 under GLP conditions (BASF, 2010). Activated sludge collected from a domestic sewage treatment plant was exposed to nominal test concentrations of 0, 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/L in a dose-response test over 180 min. A positive control (3,5-dichlorophenol) was used in order to validate the test conditions. On the basis of respiration rate the effect concentrations were determined by measuring the CO2-evolution. At the end of the exposure period an EC50-value could not be calculated and it is considered to be > 1000 mg/L (nominal). The EC10 (180 min) was calculated to be 470 mg/L.

For Ethanol (CAS No. 64-17-5), a number of studies have been carried out to assess the toxicity of ethanol to microorganisms. In those studies ethanol has been tested on different freshwater protozoa and bacteria species. The study available forPseudomonas putida,which was performed according to DIN 38412, part 8 was chosen as key study (Bringman and Kuhn, 1978, 1980). In the dose-response test 14 concentrations were used which were not further specified. After a test duration of 72 h the toxicity threshold or EC3 was reported to be approximately 65 mg/L.

No studies on the toxicity to microorganisms are available for 3-Methylbutanol (CAS No. 123-51-3) and 2-Methylpropanol (CAS No. 78-83-1). 3 -Methylbutanol is structurally very similar to 2-Methylbutanol; both are branched primary aliphatic alcohols with five carbons. The structure of 2 -Methylpropanol only differs from 2 -Methylbutanol by the one carbon shorter chain length. The ecotoxicological profile is thus expected to be similar for the three constituents and thus effects of Fusel oil to microorganisms are not expected.
