Decomp. temp.:
64 - 84 °C
Remarks on result:
other: 4 measurements were performed in a glass capillary under air. The test item melted under decomposition.

Thermal stability, preliminary test:

The DSC-measurement (prepared at 1005 hPa) in a closed glass crucible with the test item showed an endothermic effect in the temperature range 50 °C to 70 °C (on-set 55 °C).

Melting point, Melting range :

The measurements in aluminium crucibles (measured at 1004 hPa and 1005 hPa) with a hole under nitrogen showed an endothermic effect in the temperature range 45 – 90 °C (on-set 53-58°C). Two additional endothermic effects have been observed in the temperature ranges 90 – 220 °C (on-set 102-125°C) and 340 – 430 °C (on-set 420-423°C) respectively. A detailed discussion of the last two endothermic effects could be found in the robust study summary under section 4.3 (k_Krack_boiling point).

An additional measurement with the capillary method was performed in order to clarify the results of the DSC measurement.

Due to the results of the DSC measurements it can be concluded that the test item starts melting between 53 -58 °C (under nitrogen). It is assumed that the second endothermic results due to the evaporation of water (CoA states a moisture content of 0.8 %). The test item melted between 64 - 84 °C under air under decomposition.

Conclusions:
The test substance melts in the range between 53-58 °C if heated in an aluminium crucible under nitrogen. The test substance melts under decomposition in the range between 64-84 °C if heated in an glass capillary under air.

Description of key information

Cobalt bis(2-ethylhexanoate) melts in the range between 53-58 °C if heated in an aluminium crucible under nitrogen.

Cobalt bis(2-ethylhexanoate) melts under decomposition in the range between 64-84 °C if heated in a glass capillary under air.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The melting point of the test substance was determined according to OECD guideline 102 with the differential scanning calorimetry method (DSC).The test item was heated up from ambient to the final temperature (100 °C and 500°C respectively) at a constant heating rate (10 K/min) in a defined atmosphere (nitrogen). The quantity of heat absorbed or released was measured and recorded. Aluminium crucibles with a small hole were used as containers for the test item and as empty reference crucible.

A measurement in a glass capillary tube under air in a metal block was used to clarify the results from the DSC-measurement. The maximum temperature of this equipment is limited to 400 °C. Set point and maximum temperature were chosen according to the results of the DSC measurements.

The results of the DSC measurements showed that cobalt bis(2-ethylhexanoate) starts melting between 53 -58 °C (under nitrogen). Cobalt bis(2-ethylhexanoate) melted between 64 - 84 °C under air under decomposition.
