Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Parent compound 2 -ethylhexanoyl chloride (CAS 760-67-8):

No data are available for 2 -ethylhexanoyl chloride. The substance rapidly decomposes in water and forms2-ethylhexanoic acid (CAS 149-57-5) and hydrochloric acid (HCl, CAS 7647 -01 -0). Therefore, the short-term toxicity to algae is assessed on the basis of data on2-ethylhexanoic acid.

Hydrolysis product 2-ethylhexanoic acid (CAS 149-57-5):

The toxicity of 2 -ethylhexanoic acid to algae is assessed via a study according to German Industrial Standards DIN 38412 L9 (BASF AG, 1989). The test species was Desmodesmus subspicatus (reported as Scenedesmus subspicatus). No analytical measurements were performed during the study. However, the information on the stability of the test item in the test solutions is available in the acute toxicity fish test (see IUCLID Ch. 6.1.1). The test item was not stable during the test, based on the measured concentrations during the study. Therefore, the derived ErC10 and ErC50 values were corrected with regard to the available geometric mean recovery values presented in the acute fish test. For more details see the attached datafile in the corresponded endpoint study record under “Attached background materials”. Overall, the 96-h ErC50 of 25.3 mg/L along with the 96-h ErC10 of 16 mg/L indicate that 2 -ethylhexanoic acid is acutely harmful to aquatic algae (nominal, corrected according to the information on the stability of the test item in water).

In conclusion,2-ethylhexanoic acidis considered to be acutely harmful to algae.

Hydrolysis product hydrochloric acid (HCl; CAS 7647 -01 -0):

The hydrolysis product hydrochloric acid (HCl) was tested in an algae growth inhibition test according to OECD 201 with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The 72-h ErC50 was 0.492 mg/L (acid equivalent to pH 5.3), the 72 -h NOEC was 0.097 (acid equivalent to pH 6; OECD 2002).
