Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

The peroxide bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate hydrolyses instantly, with a half-life of less than 1 hour. 2-ethylhexan-1-ol is the main degradation product of the peroxide. In the hydrolysis test it is formed at a proportion of 84.496.6 %. In addition, 2-ethylhexan-1-ol is more toxic than the other degradation products formed from bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate (please refer to the document "Role of the degradation products of bis(2ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate (EPCS, CAS 16111629) in the hazard and risk assessment" which is attached to IUCLID section 13). Therefore, acute and chronic test results of 2-ethylhexan-1-ol are used in the risk assessment of bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate:

Experimental data on the acute toxicity to fish for bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate are not available. Therefore, results (estimated as well as experimental) for the major breakdown product 2-ethylhexan-1-ol are used in the risk assessment of bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate. The lowest observed value for 96-h acute fish toxicity is LC50 = 16.207 mg/L.

An algal growth inhibition study according to OECD guideline 201 / EU C.3 was conducted. The NOELR (WAF) value of bis(2-ethylhexyl)peroxydicarbonate to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata based on growth rate is 100 mg/L (nominal) which corresponds to a measured NOEC of the degradation product 2-ethylhexan-1-ol of 7.26 mg/L.

The 48-hour EC50 of bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate to Daphnia magna was 9.4 mg/L (EU C.2, OECD 202). Quantification of the test substance was accomplished via the degradation product 2-ethylhexan-1-ol.

The 21-d NOEC (reproduction of Daphnia) of 2-ethylhexan-1-ol of 1.6 mg/L is used in the risk assessment of bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate. The test was conducted according to the guideline “Proposed preliminary testing method by the UBA (1 January 1984): Prolonged toxicity test on Daphnia magna (Determination of NOEC for reproduction rate, mortality and time of the first appearance of offspring; 21 d.”

A respiration inhibition test with activated sludge according OECD guideline 209 was conducted to determine the toxicity of bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate towards microorganisms. The 3-h NOEC for bis(2-ethylhexyl)peroxydicarbonate is 15 mg/L.
