Any other information on results incl. tables

500 ppm: no toxic effects

1000 ppm: lethargy, diminished response to noise, traces of blood around the nostrils, low body weight gain;

No changes were found when the blood taken 24 h after the cessation of exposure and the final 24-h urine were analysed

No significant autopsy findings

Histopathological findings: some foamy macrophages observable free in the alveoli

40000 ppm: death of all the exposed animals within 3 minutes

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Executive summary:

Groups of 4 male and four female rats (150 - 170 g bw) were exposed to atmospheres of o-chlorotoluene (500, 1000 or 40000 ppm (= ca. 2.635, 5.27 or 210.8 mg/l) 6 hours/days, 5 days/week for 3 weeks. Exposure to an atmosphere of 500 ppm (ca. 2.635 mg/l) was without effect.

The NOEL is 500 ppm based on adverse effects observed at 1000 ppm (lethargy, diminished response to noise, traces of blood around the nostrils, low body weight gain).
