Description of key information

The test substance is inherently biodegradable, not fulfilling specific criteria, as shown in Zahn-Wellens tests (OECD302B). The test substance was also shown to be rapidly biodegradable in an enhanced ready biodegradability test, but the fact that the test was enhanced does not allow drawing conclusions on ready biodegradability. The first step in degrading the test substance is demethylation, which is the slow step, followed by faster degradation of morpholine through ring cleavage. Adaptation of the sludge was shown to substantially speed up the degradation. Further findings indicated that slowly reproducing organisms in sludge are the organisms most efficiently breaking down the test substance. Therefore, WWTPs including a step with low load and high sludge age (>= 14 days) would be more efficient in rapidly removing the test substance.
