Description of key information

No acute toxicity of the category members of the Long Chain Alcohol Esters to aquatic invertebrates up to the limit of water solubility.

Two studies investigated the effects of the category members of the Long Chain Alcohol Esters towards freshwater invertebrates. In a study by Wierich, 2001 the short-term effects of the category member fatty acids, C16-18, C12-18-alkyl esters (CAS: 95912-87-1) to the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna were investigated. The study was performed according to OECD guideline 202. The test was conducted using a water accommodated fraction (WAF) with a nominal concentration of 100 mg/L. As a result of this study an EC50 (48 h) > 100 mg/L (nominal) was determined. Measured concentrations were in the range of 0.1 – 0.2 mg/L or even below the detection limit. Thus, no effects below the limit of water solubility were observed. This finding is supported by a test with the analogue substance 2-ethylhexyl oleate (CAS: 26399-02-0). This study was performed according to the EU method C.2 and resulted in an EC50 (48 h) > 100 mg/L (nominal, filtered) (Kuech, 1995). Also in this study no effects below the limit of water solubility were observed. Based on the results and considering the category (for CAS: 95912-87-1) and analogue approach (for CAS: 26399-02-0) it can be concluded, that the category members of the Long Chain Alcohol Esters will not have any short-term effects to aquatic invertebrates.
