Description of key information
NOEC (3h) >= 350 mg/L (nominal) for respiration rate of activated sludge (similar to OECD 209, read across to Dibutyl adipate CAS 105-99-7 and Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate CAS 103-23-1)

Since no studies investigating the toxicity to aquatic microorganisms of Dihexyl adipate (CAS No. 110-33-8) are available for this endpoint, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances, a read-across to the structurally related category members Dibutyl adipate (CAS 105-99-7) and Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (CAS 103-23-1) was conducted. Further justification is given within the endpoint summary 6.1 and within the category justification section 13. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance within this category was used.
The study with Dibutyl adipate (CAS 105-99-7) was conducted under GLP and performed similar to OECD guideline 209 using activated sludge of a predominately domestic sewage as inoculum (Müller, 1998). The test substance was directly added to the vessels. The effect of the test substance on the respiration rate was determined under static conditions using nominal concentrations in the range of 1000 to 10,000 mg/L. No respiration inhibition was measured. Hence, the 3 h-EC10 is determined to be > 10000 mg/L on the basis of the nominal test concentration.
The GLP study with Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (CAS 103-23-1) was conducted according to EU method C12 using activated sludge as inoculum (Huels, 1996). The 3 h-NOEC was determined to be >= 350 mg/L on the basis of the nominal test concentration.
Due to the structural and property similarities with the tested category members Dibutyl adipate (CAS 105-99-7) and Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (CAS 103-23-1) this result is also applicable to read across to Dihexyl adipate (CAS 110-33-8).
