To describe the short-term toxicity to fish a study with a representative mixture of ‘EDTA metal complexes with cobalt, copper, iron, manganese and zinc’ (CAS 234446-82-3) is available [Toxikon Corporation, on behalf of Ciba, 1999]. The study was conducted according to OECD guideline 203 under non-GLP conditions with Pimephales promelas as test species. Mortality of animals exposed to the test item ranged between 0 - 25%. The 96-hour LC50 value was incalculable because of the low mortality in the treatment concentrations. Therefore the NOEC and the LC50 is reported as >= 100 mg/L.

Further short-term toxicity studies with fish are available for the single components of the UVCB (FeEDTANa, CAS 15708-41-5; MnEDTANa2, CAS 15375-84-5; ZnEDTANa2, CAS 14025-21-9; CuEDTANa2 CAS 14025-15-1). These tests confirm the low toxicity of the EDTA metal complexes to fish. Thus the two main components of the UVCB (EDTA complexes with iron and manganese) caused no short-term effects on fish up to test concentration of 100 mg/L and 1000 mg/L, respectively. 

The studies were conducted with the rainbow trout Onchorhynchus mykiss for FeNaEDTA (CAS 15708-41-5) [Eurofins-GAB, on behalf of Neudorff GmbH, 2007] and with zebra fish Danio rerio for MnEDTANa2 (CAS 15375-84-5) [Akzo Nobel, 2007]. Both studies followed the test procedure described in OECD guideline 203, under GLP conditions and with analytical monitoring of the test item concentration.
