Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

- Endpoint:
- water solubility
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- June 2000
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: Non guideline experiment, well documented
- Qualifier:
- no guideline followed
- Version / remarks:
- internal procedure
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Aluminium triisopropylate was to be investigated for stability in aqueous solution. An internal method was developed in order to quantify the hydrolytical stability of various aluminium alcoholates and determine quantitatively the hydrolysis.
- GLP compliance:
- no
- Type of method:
- other: investigation on solubility and hydrolysis
- Water solubility:
- other: lumps dissolved completely resulting in a white suspension
- Temp.:
- 20 °C
- pH:
- 8.5
- Remarks on result:
- not determinable
- Details on results:
- The lump substance dissolved over time but entirely within 4 hours by forming a white suspension.
- Conclusions:
- Aluminium isopropylate decomposes quantitatively in water to form isopropanol and the aluminium moieties Al(OH)2 +, Al(OH)3, AlO(OH) and Al(OH)4-
Reference
The substance dissociated quantitatively making a water solubility meaningless. The degree of hydrolysis was determined to be 98.1 % determined by quntitative analysis of isopropanol formed, and thus within limits of accuracy quantitative. Hydrolysis by-products were Al(OH)2 +, Al(OH)3, AlO(OH) and Al(OH)4- respectively as estimated from resulting pH value being 8.5.
Description of key information
Water solubility of aluminium tri-isopropylate cannot be determined as such as the substance reacts immediately with water in order to yield almost quantitatively isopropanol and aluminium 3+ species, which do precipitate as white solid, resp. for a short period of time remain in a colloidal form (white suspension) as shown in a laboratory experiment. As surrogate for hazard and risk assessment supportive studies have been added indicating the solubility of isopropanol formed (fully miscible with water). The water solubility of the aluminium hydroxide, aluminiumhydroxyl oxide and aluminium is very low.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
The water solubility of aluminium chloride, nitrate and sulfate is 3.9 -6.9 g/L. These aluminium salts are tested in some of the ecotoxicity studies included in the dossier (they represent a worst case scenario in view of exposure to aluminium(III) species).
For explanation for using surrogate data in a weight of evidence approach see also the document in section 13 IUCLID.
