Additional information

Hydrolysis is not expected to be an important fate process for asphalt, sulfonated, sodium salt (SAS). Chemicals that have a potential to hydrolyze include alkyl halides, amides, carbamates, carboxylic acid esters and lactones, epoxides, phosphate esters, and sulfonic acid esters (Harris, 1982 in API, 2003a). Because SAS does not contain significant levels of these functional groups, components in SAS are not subject to hydrolysis.
