Description of key information
The EC50 to green algae was found being 2.0 mg/L based on chromium trichloride hexahydrate (96h, Selenastrum capricornutum). However, a colour effect (chromium trichloride is intensively violet in solution) is likely and effects on growth might not be attributable to algae toxicity.

Richter et al. had conducted a study to evaluate the short-term toxicity of the test substance chromium trichloride to algae during 4 days exposure. The 96h-ErC50 of the test substance (chromium chloride) to the green algae (Selenastrum capricornutum) was 397 µg Cr/L. Thus, the 96h-ErC50 of chromium trichloride (anhydrous) to the algae can be estimated as 1.21 mg/L and more appropriate 2.0 mg/L as chromium trichloride hexahydrate, the water soluble form. It should be noted, that chromium trichloride hexahydrate is intensively coloured violet and thus the growth rate reduction seen in this study may not be a real toxic effect but a physical effect of light absorption, reducing light intensity available to algae for growth.
A NOEC of 0.08 mg Cr/L (equivalent of 0.41 mg CrCl3.6H2O/L) was reported too in Concise International Chemical Assessment Document 76 INORGANIC CHROMIUM(III) COMPOUNDS, 2009.
