Toxicity to soil macroorganisms except arthropods:


Key study: LC50 (14 days) for Eisenia fetida = 1139.9 mg/kg soil dw (test method according to EU C8 guideline). This result suggests a low toxicity of trichloroacetic acid to Eisenia fetida.


 


Toxicity to terrestrial arthropods:


Supporting study: Fourteen months after trichloroacetic acid treatment, the number of Agriotes obscurus (wireworms) and springtails decreased, but not significantly. Otherwise, the number of millipedes and mites increased. Twenty-six months after treatment, the number of Agriotes sputator (wireworms) decreased, but not significantly.


 


Toxicity to terrestrial plants:


Key study: Several results with three different species. The 14 -d EC50 value for Avena sativa in a loam sand soil culture was 4.6 mg/kg. The NOEC value was 1 mg/kg. (test method acccording to OECD guideline 208). In fact, trichloroacetic acid is a known monocotyledon toxicant. A potential risk to the terrestrial environment is identified due to high toxicity to plants.


 


The 14 -d EC50 value for Lactuca sativa in a loam sand soil was 37 mg/kg.


 


The 14 -d EC50 value for Lycopersicum esculentum in a loam sand soil was 154 mg/kg.


 


Toxicity to  soil microorganisms:


The NOEC for nitrogen transformation was determined to be 100.0 mg test item/kg soil dry.
