Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

The effect of Bis(2-butoxyethyl) adipate on growth of the unicellular algal species Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was measured during a 72 hours exposure period. Results were expressed as % growth inhibition compared to the control, for biomass and growth inhibition. Test results are considered valid. The ErC50 is 21.22 mg/l and EbC50 is 8.71 mg/l. The 72h-EC10 for growth rate and biomass are 7.05 and 2.32 mg/l respectively.

The aquatic toxicity was also estimated using the ECOSAR model v1.10 included in the EpiSuite program of US-EPA. Bis(2-butoxyethyl) adipate is regarded as an ester. The estimated 96-hr LC50 value for algae is 2.314 mg/l. The estimated chronic value (ChV) is 1.06 mg/l, the corresponding NOEC is 0.75 mg/l. The acute and chronic toxicity is overestimated with a factor of 10 by the model.

In ECOSAR, the estimated chronic toxicity is expressed as the chronic value (ChV). The ChV, is defined as the geometric mean of the no observed effect concentration (NOEC) and the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC). To derive a NOEC, the ChV can be divided by √2 (REACH Guidance R10, Table R10-1).

The acute and chronic aquatic toxicity of Bis(2-butoxyethyl) adipate for freshwater fish and Daphnid were also estimated in ECOSAR v1.10. The estimated 96-hr LC50 values for fish and Daphnid are 4.5 mg/l and 7.2 mg/l respectively; the ChV values for fish and Daphnid are estimated to be 0.22 mg/l and 2.95 mg/l; the corresponding NOEC values are 0.15 mg/l and 2 mg/l.

The EC50 (3h) of bis(2-butoxyethyl) adipate was determined as 125.2 mg/l (nominal) in an active sludge respiration inhibition test (OECD test guideline 209).
