Reliable short-term toxicity tests conducted with the registered substance, 3-(triethoxysilyl)propiononitrile (CAS 919-31-3), are available for species of freshwater fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss), freshwater invertebrate (Daphnia magna) and freshwater algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata).
It is likely that under the flow-through conditions for the fish and invertebrate tests, the test organisms were primarily exposed to the parent substance with minor quantities of its hydrolysis products (3-trihydroxysilyl)propiononitrile and ethanol. In the static exposure system used for the 72-hour algal test, it is likely that exposure to the hydrolysis products would have predominated throughout the test period. Therefore, the nominal concentrations for the algae test are used for aquatic toxicity evaluation.
The relevant short-term values are:
Fish: LC50 (96 h): >110 mg/l (measured concentration) (Springborn Smithers, 2007).
Invertebrates: Daphnia: EC50 (48 h): >100 mg/l (measured concentration) (Springborn Smithers, 2007).
Algae: (72 h) ErC50: >120 mg/l and NOEC: 60 mg/l (nominal concentration) (Springborn Smithers, 2007).
An activated sludge respiration inhibition 3-hour EC50 value of >100 mg/l (loading rate) was determined for effects on sewage treatment plant microorganisms (Desmares-Koopmans, 2009).
