Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Justification for classification or non-classification

because of impurities profile (i.e. presence of benzene), the substance is classified as Carcinogenicity: Carc. Cat. 1; R45 May cause cancer, in accordance with Directive 67/548/EEC and Carcinogen Category 1A; H350: May cause cancer, in accordance with the GHS criteria of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

Additional information

The IARC evaluation of ethylbenzene (IARC, 2000):

·       There is inadequate evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of ethylbenzene.

·       There is sufficient evidence in experimental animals for the carcinogenicity of ethylbenzene.

·       Overall evaluation: Ethylbenzene is possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B).

Moreover, because of impurities profile (i.e. presence of benzene), the substance is classified as Carcinogenicity: Carc. Cat. 1; R45 May cause cancer, in accordance with Directive 67/548/EEC and Carcinogen Category 1A; H350: May cause cancer, in accordance with the GHS criteria of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

Therefore, no additional testing of ethylbenzene for carcinogenicity is required.
