Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Additional information

Physical and chemical properies of copper iodide.

Property

Value

Remarks

Physical state at 20°C and 101.3 kPa

Solid.

Form: Powder.

Colour: Light beige (9/1 10Y by the Munsell colour system).

Odour: Odourless.

Melting/freezing point

591 °C.

Handbook data.

Boiling point

≈ 1290 °C.

Handbook data.

Relative density

5.67 g/cm3

Density value determined near room temperature. Handbook data.

Vapour pressure

Not applicable.

The substance is an inorganic salt and as such has negligible vapour pressure at environmentally relevant temperatures.

Surface tension

72.4 mN/m at 20.5 ± 0.5°C.

Water solubility

0.2 mg/L

Handbook data.

A Transformation/Dissolution test was also conducted.

For the test at pH 6 at a loading of 100 mg/L Copper iodide an average dissolved copper concentration of 3643 ± 49 µg/L was found.

For the test at pH 8 at a loading of 100 mg/L Copper iodide an average dissolved copper concentration of 2201 ± 34 µg/L was found.

Partition coefficient n-octanol/water (log value)

Not applicable.

Estimation is considered not to be viable due to the low solubility of copper iodide in water and octanol.

Flash point

Not applicable.

Not required as the substance is solid.

Flammability

Not highly flammable.

Copper iodide has been determined to be not highly flammable as it failed to ignite in the preliminary screening test.

Explosive properties

Not explosive.

Copper iodide was assessed for chemical groups that imply explosive properties. Since none of these are present in the chemical structure of the test substance, copper iodide is considered not to be explosive.

Self-ignition temperature

Did not self-ignite below 400°C.

Oxidising properties

No oxidising properties.

Copper iodide was assessed for chemical groups that imply oxidising properties. Since none of these are present in the chemical structure of the test substance, copper iodide is considered not to possess any oxidising properties.

Granulometry

Volume-rated particle size distribution by laser diffraction: D(v,0.1) 2.01 µm; D (v,0.5) 3.91 µm; D(v,0.9) 7.74 µm.

Number-rated particle size distribution by laser diffraction: D(n,0.1) 1.30 µm; D (n,0.5) 1.97 µm; D(n,0.9) 3.54 µm.

Joint registrants that produce or import copper iodide corresponding to this specification are able to refer to the Lead Registrant's granulometry data for the purpose of REACH registration.

The material does not fall under the category of nanomaterial (50% < 0.1 µm based on particle number).

The Exposure Scenarios developed under REACH are based on the worst-case assumption that 100% of any material becoming airbourne is respirable.

Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products

Not applicable.

As stated in the REACH regulations, the study does not need to be conducted if the substance is inorganic.

Dissociation constant

Not applicable.

The dissociation constants in water was not determined according to Method 112 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 12 May 1981 as the test item, being an inorganic salt, would be ionized in solution within the environmentally relevant pH range and therefore the test is not applicable.

Viscosity

Not applicable.

Not applicable to solids.

Auto flammability

Did not self-ignite below 400°C.
