Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Biodegradation in water: not readily biodegradable (EU method C.4-E)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed

Additional information

To assess the biodegradation potential of the test substance, results of several biodegradation tests are available. The test identified as key study was performed according to EU method C.4 -E using the secondary effluent of a sewage treatment plant predominantly fed with municipal wastewater as inoculum. Based on a test concentration of 2 mg/L a degradation of 1.45% was observed after 28 days.

Hence, the substance is considered as not readily biodegradable according to the OECD criteria.

This result is supported by two other biodegradation studies testing the biodegradation potential of both isomers separately. The first test followed the procedures of a close bottle test using a suspension of soil as inoculum. Based on a test concentration of 4 mg/L a degradation of ≤ 1% was determined for both isomers after 30 days. The second test followed the procedures of a Warburg Test in closed bottles using adapted microorganisms. The O2-consuption was measured by manometers and the evolved CO2 was trapped in KOH solution. For each isomer a test substance concentration of 100 mg/L was used. After 14 days a degradation of 1% was observed.
