Results
Safety pre-test 1
Heated on a magnesia groove over a Bunsen burner the test item carbonised immediately and expanded in the heat.
Beaten with a hammer on the anvil no reaction could be observed.
Safety pre-test 2
No deformation of the crucible was observed. The mass of the crucible was recorded with 624.98 mg after cooling down. A black residue was left in the crucible. The sealing was black coloured.
Calibration
After calibration with indium and zinc the measurement of indium yielded the following values:
Expected melting point |
Measured melting point |
Expected heat flow |
Measured heat flow |
Assessment |
156.6±1.0 °C |
156.28 °C |
28.45±1.0 J/g |
28.61 J/g |
ok |
The measurement of indium after calibration met the validity criteria.
DSC Screening of the Test Item
An endothermic event was observed which can be stated as a solid to solid transition of the test item at 89.91 °C.
No further events were detected.
After the measurement the crucible was unchanged. The mass of the crucible was recorded with 623.74 mg. A black residue was left in the crucible and the sealing was black discoloured (sign of decomposition).
EVALUATION AND DISCUSSION
During the DSC run only an endothermic event was observed.
In accordance to the determination of the melting and boiling point study, no melting was observed till 400 °C. Therefore the first event can be stated as solid to solid transition.
No exothermic events occurred therefore the test item is no subject to the classification procedures for self-reactive substances and the acceptance procedures for Class 1 explosives need not to be applied.
The measurement of indium after calibration met the validity criteria. Therefore, the resultof the study is considered valid.
