Additional information
No study investigating the short-term toxicity of Monopentaerythritol tetraesters and dipentaerythritol hexaesters of 2-ethylhexanoic and n-valeric acids to aquatic invertebrates is available. Therefore, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read-across to the structurally related source substances Dipentaerythritol with fatty acids, C5 and C9iso (CAS 647028-25-9), Carboxylic acids, C5-9, tetraesters with pentaerythritol (CAS 67762-53-2) and Decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS 71010-76-9), is applied.
Based on the high degree of similarity between the structural and physico-chemical properties of the target and source substances, the source substances are considered as suitable representative for the evaluation of the short-term toxicity of the target substance to aquatic invertebrates. The read-across approach is justified in detail within the analogue justification in IUCLID section 13.
The
first study investigated the acute toxicity effects of the source
substance Dipentaerythritol with fatty acids, C5 and C9iso (CAS
647028-25-9) to aquatic invertebrates according to OECD guideline 202.
The test was conducted with Daphnia magna.The study was set up in
a static test system. Daphnids were exposed to a water accommodated
fraction (WAF) with a limit loading rate of 100 mg/L. At test
termination after 48 h an EL50 > 100 mg/L based on nominal loading rate
was determined.
The short-term toxicity of source substance Carboxylic acids, C5-9,
tetraesters with pentaerythritol (CAS 67762-53-2) to aquatic
invertebrates was conducted according to OECD 202 under static
conditions. A nominal loading rate of 100 mg/L (prepared as WAF),
corresponding to a measured concentration of 1.3 mg/L, was tested. No
immobilisation was observed in the treatment throughout the test period
of 48 h. The 48 h-EL50 is determined to be > 100 mg/L based on the
nominal loading rate and > 1.3 mg/L based on the measured concentration.
The last study investigated the acute toxicity effects of the source
substance Decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic
acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS No. 71010-76-9) to Daphnia
magna according to OECD 202 under static conditions. Loading rate WAFs
of 62, 132, 251, 503 and 1072 mg/L were tested. No immobilisation was
observed in any treatment and the control throughout the test period of
48 h. Hence, the 48 h-EL50 is determined to be > 1072 mg/L based on the
nominal loading rate.
Based on the available results from structurally related source substances (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which are characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded that Monopentaerythritol tetraesters and dipentaerythritol hexaesters of 2-ethylhexanoic and n-valeric acids will not exhibit short-term effects to aquatic invertebrates up to the highest concentration/loading rate tested.
