Administrative data
Link to relevant study record(s)
- Endpoint:
- surface tension
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- From 09 November 2015 To 31 March 2016
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- OECD Guideline 115 (Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions)
- Deviations:
- no
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Type of method:
- ring method
- Specific details on test material used for the study:
- STABILITY AND STORAGE CONDITIONS OF TEST MATERIAL
- Storage condition of test material: Controlled room temperature (15-25°C, below 70 RH%)
TREATMENT OF TEST MATERIAL PRIOR TO TESTING
- about 250 mg of the test item was measured into a 250 ml volumetric flask. It was filled up to the mark with ultrapure water and thoroughly mixed. - Key result
- Surface tension:
- 73 mN/m
- Temp.:
- 20 °C
- Conc.:
- 1 g/L
- Conclusions:
- The surface tension of test item solution (at 1g/l) was found to be 73.0 mN/m at 20 °C, using the ring method. As this value is higher than 60 mN/m, the test item is not considered to possess surface active properties.
- Executive summary:
The determination of the surface tension was carried out using the ring method.
The method is based on the measurement of the force, which is necessary to exert vertically on a ring, in contact with the surface of the liquid, in order to separate it from the surface.
The value was found to be 73.0 mN/m. As this value is higher than 60 mN/m, the test item is not considered to possess surface active properties.
Reference
In order to describe the time dependence of the surface tension after transferring the solution to the measurement vessel, repeated measurements were carried out with increasing the equilibrium time. A constant surface tension was reached after about 400 sec
The mean surface tension of the test item aqueous solution read on the instrument was 72.7 mN/m at 20 °C representing the mean of five separate measurements. This value correspond to a mean measured surface tension of 73.0 mN/m after correction by the calibration factor.
As the surface tension value was higher than 60 mN/m, the test item is not considered as possessing surface active properties.
Description of key information
The surface tension of the test item was determined according to recognized guideline (EU Method A.5 and OECD guideline 115) and under GLP. No deviation from the guideline was observed during the test.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Surface tension:
- 73
- in mN/m at 20°C and concentration in mg/L:
- 1 000
Additional information
As the surface tension value is higher than 60 mN/m, the test item is not considered to possess surface active properties
