Description of key information
We consider aquatic toxicity testing to be unnecessary for three reasons.
1. There is plenty of evidence to show that perfluorocarbons as a class, and octafluoroprone specifically, are not in any way toxic, and several, including octafluoropropane, are routinely used as medical devices. We can therefore be confident that octafluoropropane is not toxic to aquatic organisms.
2. Octafluoropropane will not be present in the aquatic environment. Octafluoropropane is a gas, boiling at -37°C. It is also hydophobic, with a very low water solubility, ca. 10 ppm.
3. The above also means that toxicity testing would be prohibitively expensive.
