Biodegradation in water

No ready biodegradability is predicted for 2-methylquinoline by BIOWIN v.4.10.

This predicted value is support by two experimental studies reported in Summary report of Toxicological Literature for Methylquinolines, NTP,2002:

- In the first study (Dembek et all, FEBS Letters 246(1-2):113-116,1989. Abstract from BIOTECHNO 1989:19087782, 1989) the biotrasformation performed by Alcaigenes and Arthrobacter species was analysed: 2-methylquinoline was transformed by Alcaigenes and Arthrobacter species to 3,4-dihydroxy-2-oxo-1,2-dihydroquinoline, followed by decomposition to quinisatin. Quinisatin then decomposed to anthranilic acid (CAS 118-92-3) and isatin (CAS 91-56-5). Based on BIOWIN V.4.10 anthranilic acid is ready-biodegradable but isatin is not ready-biodegradable.

- In the second study (Johansen et all, Appl. Microbiol. Biotechnol. 47(3):292-300, 1997), 2-methylquinoline was resistant to degradation by Desulfobacterium indolicum due to the substitution in position 2 of pyridine ring.
