- Justification:
Classification of Ethyl formate (CAS no. 94-47-3) for effects in the environment:
The test-material, Ethyl formate (CAS no. 94-47-3) is mainly used as the washing & cleaning products, air care products, polishes and waxes, biocides cosmetics and personal care products and perfumes and fragrances. The classification of the chemical into the PBT category was mainly done based on the available data in the different section below and categorized using the Annex XIII as the reference document.
Persistence Assessment:
Biodegradation study was conducted on test chemical by various experimental procedures, which include Closed bottle test (301D), Respirometric test. Both experimental outcomes, shows the degradation of greater than 77%. Above mentioned experimental reports was supported by the publications results from the peer reviewed journal. By analysing all the data available, it clearly makes us to come to conclude that test chemical is readily biodegradable in nature.
Bioaccumulation assessment
All the available data on target and surrogate chemical on bioaccumulation studies reveal that the test chemical doesn’t have potential to get accumulate in the various visceral organs of the tested aquatic species. The value of BCF of test chemical is not exceeding the 2000, evidencing it be a non bio-accumualtive chemical.
Toxicity assessment
Aquatic organisms
Reports and publication in the section 6, values on the aquatic organisms (fish) ranges from 100-230mg/L. Based on the weight of evidence approach, the toxic concentration of test chemical to algae range from 131.7 to 5600 mg/L. After careful observation of data, it is not expected that test chemical has a potential to have NOEC value below 0.01 mg/L. As per the Annex XIII it does not meet the criteria of classifying the chemical in toxic chemical.
Mammalian toxicity
The summaries of all the reports to mammalian toxicity suggests that the test chemical is neither a CMR nor the STOT chemical.
Conclusion:
On critical analysis of all the endpoints, the test chemical does not meet the criteria of PBT and it cannot be classified as the PBT chemical.
