- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 25 November 2011 to 05 December 2011
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: GLP-compliant, guideline study, available as an unpublished report, reliable without restrictions
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- other: Procedure designed to be compatible with Test N.1 of the UN Recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods, Manual of tests and criteria, fifth revised edition, 2009
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Test was conducted in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of 16 December 2008, on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures, using a procedure designed to be compatible with Test N.1 of the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, fifth revised edition 2009
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)

- Remarks:
- or specified in description of method (migrated information)
- Burning time:
- 18 s
- Remarks on result:
- other: Combustion propagated over 100 mm in 18 seconds. Wetted zone held up propagation for 8 seconds before combustion propagated over the remaining length of the pile
- Interpretation of results:
- flammable
- Remarks:
- Migrated information
- Conclusions:
- The test item is classified as a category 1 flammable solid in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of 16 December 2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures.
- Executive summary:
The flammability of the solid was determined in a GLP-compliant, guideline study. This is considered suitable for use as the key study for this endpoint.
Reference
In the preliminary test the pile burnt with a yellow flame that produced black smoke and left black charred remains. Combustion was propagated over 200 mm in 36 seconds.
In the main test the pile burnt with a yellow flame which emitted black smoke and left black charred remains. Combustion was propagated over 100 mm in 18 seconds.
Description of key information
Balsams, copaiba, sulfurized, mixed with turpentine, gold salts is classified as a Category 1 flammable solid in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of 16 December 2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- flammable
Additional information
A GLP-compliant study following a procedure designed to be compatible with Test N.1 of the UN recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods is available for this endpoint (Harlan Laboratories 2012) and is considered to be suitable for use as the key study.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Balsams, copaiba, sulfurized, mixed with turpentine, gold salts is classified as a Category 1 flammable solid (H228) on the basis of a GLP-compliant study conducted to be compatible with Test N.1 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, fifth revised edition 2009 (Harlan Laboratories 2012).
