Description of key information

One study has been chosen as key study, it is of reliability 1, conducted according the OECD guideline 201, EU method C3 and GLP (Voltes, 2009b).
This is a 72- hour acute toxicity study, where cultures of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata were exposed to PMP at measured concentrations of 0.281, 0.907, 2.96, 9.50, 31.2 and 96.9 mg/L under static conditions.
The 72h EC50 (calculated from initial measured concentrations) was 54.7 mg/L based on average specific growth rate and 19 mg/L based on yield. The NOEC was 2.96 mg/L.
No abnormalities were noted.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
54.7 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
2.96 mg/L

Additional information

Based on the results of this study, PMP would be classified as harmful to aquatic algae.
