Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The substance is not readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria, but can be easily eliminated from water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed

Additional information

In a ready biodegradability test according to OECD guideline 301A no DOC removal was observed (CIBA - GEIGY 1990). Hence, the substance is poorly biodegradable. A BOD5 test, in which no oxygen consumption was measured, confirms the poor biodegradabilty of Direct Yellow (CIBA - GEIGY 1990).

Additional information is given from a Zahn Wellens test (OECD 302B). After 3 hours 49.5 % DOC removal was measured. Hence, the substance is highly adsorptive on activated sludge and thus easily eliminable from water (CIBA - GEIGY 1996).
