Toxicity to micro organisms has been tested with a sample of activated sludge from domestic waste water treatment plant over a 3 hr period at nominal concentrations from 100 - 10,000 mg/l. No effects were observed and the EC10 are >10,000 mg/l. In another study, Photobacterium phosphoreum was exposed for a 5 min period, the EC 20.5 and EC 50.5 was calculated as 1100 mg/l and 3600 mg/l on the basis of bioluminiscence inhibition. In a third study, toxicity to Pseudomonas putida over 18 h exposure was tested. Inhibitory effects were observed starting from 6600 mg/l. The activated sludge inhibition study is considered the most relevant study to conclude on the PNEC for activated sludge in a waste water treatment plant.
