Description of key information

An acute toxicity study was performed withLeuciscus iduswas according to a German national guideline (draft). Test item concentrations were not analytically verified. The 96-h LC50 was determined to be greater than 1000 mg/L (Bayer AG, 1988). This is an accordance with the results from sodium formate.

No reliable experimental data for aquatic invertebrates, algae and aquatic microorganisms are available for calcium diformate. Therefore a read-across was performed to sodium formate. Supporting studies indicating that marine organisms are not more sensitive to formate were conducted with potassium formate.

With the analogous substance sodium formate, acute tests on all three trophic levels are available. In all cases the effect concentrations (L(E)C50) were clearly above 100 mg/L. The same is true for the saltwater studies on fish, daphnids and algae performed with potassium formate. Therefore, it can be concluded with high probability that sodium formate and hence calcium diformate is acutely not harmful to aquatic organisms.

Regarding chronic effects, a long-term study with Daphnia magna performed with formic acid is available. The NOEC (21d) was determined to be 100 mg/L. Thus, with high probability no chronic effects are expected for aquatic organisms.
