Principles of method if other than guideline:
The substance under test is placed in an oven (Grewer oven) at room temperature; the temperature/time curve relating to conditions in the centre of the sample is recorded while the temperature of the oven is increased to 363 °C, or to the melting point if lower. The temperature of the oven at which the sample temperature reaches 400 °C by self-heating is called the self-ignition temperature. Testing in the Grewer oven is a screening procedure for self-heating substances.

Any other information on results incl. tables

A minor exothermal event with an onset temperature of 305 °C and a deltaT of 5 °C was observed. Otherwise only endothermal processes, starting at ca. 200 °C were observed.

Testing in the "Grewer oven" is a screening procedure for "self-heating substances". If T(onset) >= 220 °C (or no exothermal onset is detectable because of melting) testing according to UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, 5th Edition, 2009 is not required.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
L-aspartic acid has no self-ignition and no self-heating properties.
