There are few or no ecotoxicological data available for Copper hydroxide nitrate depending on the environmental compartment evaluated. In the assessment of the ecotoxicity of this substance, a read-across approach from data from copper ion is followed. This read-across strategy is based upon the assumption that free ionic copper is considered the active ingredient in inorganic copper salts, and is believed to be responsible for adverse effects. The bioavailablity of the copper ion at target sites determines the severity of effects. Copper hydroxide nitrate, Copper nitrate and Copper oxide are considered sparingly soluble inorganic copper salts and would be expected to dissociate similarly within the organism.
Conclusion on classification
Based on data available from read-across substances, Copper hydroxide nitrate is to be classified as aquatic acute toxicity 1 (H400) and aquatic chronic toxicity 1 (H410) as per CLP Regulation.
