Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets
Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
Inhalation: Remove victim from contaminated area into fresh air. Call emergency services. If victim has stopped breathing, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If breathing is difficult, provide oxygen.
Contact with skin: Brush to remove from skin, remove soiled clothes and shoes. Wash soiled skin with soap. If irritation persists, seek medical care.
Contact with eyes: Flush abundantly with running water for at least 10 minutes. If irritation persists, consult an ophthalmologist.
Ingestion: Rinse mouth and contact a doctor. Do not induce vomiting.
Fire-fighting measures
Extinguishing agents: Dry sand. Argon containment. ABCD powder (beware of hot particles).
Prohibited extinguishing agents: NO NOT USE: Water or humid materials Foam. Carbon dioxide (CO2).
Specific risks: Avoid impacts and friction due to the pyrophoric risk of the metal, which increases when the size of particles decreases.
Caution: Using water to fight a hafnium fire will produce hydrogen and could cause an explosion.
Special protection equipment: Do not take action without suitable protective gloves and equipment. Wear a positive pressure self-contained r spiratory apparatus and fire-retardant clothing.
Accidental release measures
Personal precautions : Do not make a suspension with this product. Do not touch or walk in spilt product. Do not breath any dust. Wear suitable protective equipment.
Precaution to protect the environment: Do not release into drains or rivers.
Clean-up: Do not use a vacuum suction cleaner (except for special equipment) or paper. Recover with care (spray with inert gas). Prevent the formation and accumulation of dust. Collect waste and place it in a closed container with a lid that does not cause friction when opened.
Handling and storage
Handling: Avoid all contact with the skin and eyes. Avoid impacts and friction, keep away from all incandescent materials.
Prevent the formation and accumulation of dust, powder, chips, etc. except when they are being packed.
Only use well-ventilated areas (keeping ventilation at a reasonable level to prevent accidental dispersion of powder).
Prevent the accumulation of electrostatic charges. Use earthed equipment.
Storage:
Technical measures: Conserve under inert gas.
Recommended storage conditions: either wet in a minimum of 25% water or dry in a closed container with a lid that does not cause friction when opened, in a dry, well-ventilated location away from any heat sources. Store protected from inclement weather and away from incompatible products (such as combustible or combustive agents).

Special provisions / remarks
- Remarks:
- Reactivity of hafnium is highly dependant on its size. Massive Hafnium is not flammable, thus, there is no ADR classification. It has to be noted that Hafnium shot is highly flammable and classified as INFLAMMABLE INORGANIC SOLID, N.S.A regarding ADR classification ( UN number:1378). It is the responsibility of the producer to choose the right entry according to the product that is put on the market.

Exposure controls / personal protection
Respiratory protection: For activities involving exposure to hafnium dust, where exposure duration is more than half a day, provide general ventilation (natural or mechanical ventilation not directly localized at the emission source), or use type PPF3 or equivalent respiratory apparatus.
Protecting the hands: Use suitable protective gloves for operations requiring the handling of hafnium. The gloves used must comply with the specifications of European Directive 89/686/CEE.
Protecting the eyes: Wear safety eyewear.
Special hygiene measures: Wash and dry your hands after handling the product.
Stability and reactivity
Condition to be avoided: In the event of a hafnium fire, do not use water.
Hafnium dust is extremely inflammable.
Formation of fine dust that may cause explosive atmospheres and flames. Heat sources.
Prevent impacts and friction.
Materials to be avoided: Acids – oxidants.
Water if the substance is on fire.
Hazardous decomposition products:
• In the presence of acid: discharge of hydrogen, in dangerous quantities if the product is finely ground or crushed
• In the presence of water: discharge of hydrogen in dangerous quantities if the product is finely ground or crushed in a concentration between 15-25% of water. With excess water, formation of an oxide layer preventing the formation of hydrogen.
Disposal considerations
Disposal of the product: Do not mix with combustible waste. Eliminate in accordance with applicable local regulations.
Handling of containers: Soiled containers must be processed in the same way as the chemical product they contain.
