Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (sensitising)
Additional information:

Handbook data reports the substance as non-sensitising in the guinea pig. However, further animal testing is contraindicated by clear systemic toxicity and industrial risk management measures designed to prevent exposure.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The harmonised classification declaring methacrylonitrile to be a skin sensitiser (category 1) is included as required by Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 even though additional animal testing, which would provide the data necessary to confirm that classification, is ruled out on the grounds of systemic toxicity in vertebrates. Expert opinion considers that methacrylonitrile is unlikely to meet criteria for classification as a skin sensitiser under the terms of Directive 67/548/EEC or GHS as reflected by Regulation (EC) 1272/2008. This conclusion is supported by the fact that structurally related methacrylates are known to have a low potential for sensitisation. There is also a lack of methodological evidence for the published 0.2 % threshold.
