Study design
- Inoculum or test system:
- activated sludge, domestic (adaptation not specified)
- Details on inoculum:
- - Source of inoculum/activated sludge (e.g. location, sampling depth, contamination history, procedure): domestic waste water treatment plant
- Preparation of inoculum for exposure: The activated sludge was washed by centrifugation and the suppernatant liquid phase was decandet. The
solid material was resuspended in tap water and again centrifuged. This procedure was repated twice. An aliquot of the final sludge suspension was weighted, dried and the ratio of the wet sludge to its dry weight was determined. Based on this ratio, calculated aliquots of washed sludge
suspension, corresponding to 1.5 g dry material per litre were mixed with the test water and then aerated until use.
- Pretreatment: The closed test flakes were incubated in a climatic chamber under continously stirring.
- Concentration of sludge: 30 mg/L
- Initial cell/biomass concentration: 1.5 g - Duration of test (contact time):

BOD5 / COD results
- Results with reference substance:
- The reference item Aniline was sufficiently degraded to 81 % after 14 days, and to 97 % after 28 days of incubation.
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Interpretation of results:
- readily biodegradable
- Conclusions:
- Since the biodegradation based on the Theoretical Oxygen Demand was determined to be 60 % biodegration reached in a 10-day-window, the test
item is considered to be ready biodegradable according to annex VI, Directive 93/21/EEC.
The percantage biodegradation of the reference item confirms the suitability of the used activated sludge inoculum.
According to test guidelines the test item can be assumed to be not inhibitory on the activated sludge micro organisms because degradation was
> 25 % within 14 days. - Executive summary:
The purpose of this study was to determine the ready biodegradability of the item L-Benzyladrianol Base. The test item was exposed to activated sludge from the aeration tank of a domestic waste water treatment plant for 28 days. The biodegradation was folllowed by the oxygen uptake of the micro organisms during exposure. As a reference item Aniline was tested simultanously under the same conditions as the test item and functioned as a procedure control.
Sicne the test substance is not well soluble in water an Manometric Respirometry Test over a period of 28 days was chosen for determination of the ready biodegradability.
