Description of key information

Fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered), aluminum salts:
< 0.15 mg/L at 20 °C, pH 6.3-6.7 (substance based on hydrogenated tallow, EU Method A.6, column elution method)
< 0.182 mg/L at room temperature, pH neutral (substance based on vegetable raw material, OECD 105, flask method)
< 0.065 mg/L at room temperature, pH neutral (substance based on vegetable raw material, OECD 105, column elution method)

Palmitic acid (57-10-3): 0.04 mg/L at 25 °C
Stearic acid (57-11-4): 0.597 mg/L at 25 °C

Ionic aluminum is relatively insoluble in the neutral pH range (6.0-8.0). Solubility of free aluminum is enhanced under acidic (pH<6) and alkaline (pH>8) conditions.

Additional information

Water solubility tests were performed for different qualities of Fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered), aluminum salts, which were produced from fatty acids of different origin (hydrogenated tallow and vegetable raw material). All results are very similar.

The key value of water solubility is taken from the study report, in which the test was performed on the tallow based substance by column elution method in accordance with EU Method A.6. The water solubility of the substance is less than 0.15 mg/L at 20 °C and pH 6.3-6.7.

For the substance based on vegetable raw material a water solubility of < 0.182 mg/L at room temperature and neutral pH was determined by column elution method and a result of < 0.065 mg /L was obtained by flask method according OECD 105.

Additional information is given by data of the two main fatty acid components, stearic acid (CAS 57-11-4) and palmitic acid (CAS 57-10-3). These data are from a peer reviewed data base.

The solubility of aluminum and its dependence on pH is common knowledge and is described in the assessment report for the three aluminum salts (chloride, nitrate and sulphate) under the Canadian Environmental Protection act: Aluminum is a strongly hydrolysing metal and is relatively insoluble in the neutral pH range (6.0-8.0). In the presence of complexing ligands and under acidic (pH<6) and alkaline (pH>8) conditions, aluminum solubility is enhanced.
