Description of key information

There are two studies reported regarding irritant effects of acetaldehyde on the skin and eye. The skin irritation study was performed in year 1982 according to GLP and OECD Guideline 404. The substance is not irritating to the rabbit skin. For the eye irritation study no method is reported. This substance is labelled as irritant in Annex I of the directive (EEC, 1967 and amendments) because of potential irritation to the eye and the upper respiratory tract. Data also published in Union Carbide Data Sheet Vol. 12/13/1963. Acetaldehyde is highly irritant and is classified as eye irritant 2, H319.
Therefore, the eye irritation study has been waived.
