Executive summary:

A study was conducted to determine the toxicity of the test substance, 'di-C18-22 AAEMIM-MS' (active: 100%), to microorganisms according to OECD Guideline 209 (Activated Sludge Respiration Inhibition Test), in compliance with GLP. Approximately 4 g/L of activated sludge (domestic) was exposed to the test substance at concentrations of 0 (negative control), 0.1, 1.0, 10, 100 and 1000 mg/L for 3 h. The dissolved oxygen (measurement of oxygen depletion rates or oxygen consumption) was recorded using a respirometer. A positive control group (3,5 -dichlorophenol) was included in the experiment and gave values within the expected range. In the control vessels, the oxygen consumption was 15.9 and 16.8 mg O2/L/h and, in the test substance vessels at concentrations of 0.1, 1.0, 10, 100 and 1000 mg/L, it was 17.2, 15.3, 18.0, 16.4 and 18.5 mg O2/L/h, respectively. No statistical differences were observed between the negative controls and the test groups. Under the study conditions, the 3 h EC50 (in activated sludge) of the test substance was determined to be >1000 mg/L (Springborn, 2010). No NOEC was reported by the author, however considering the absence of toxicity at any dose level, the NOEC can be assumed to be 1000 mg/L (nominal).

Description of key information

Based on the results of the study, 3 h EC50 (in activated sludge) of the test substance, 'di-C18-22 AAEMIM-MS', to microorganisms, was determined to be >1000 mg/L (nominal).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
1 000 mg/L
