Surface tension:

Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
500 other: mg

For the calibration difference between theoretical and experimental surface tension for the first series of test substance tests, the experimental value of 41.5 dynes/cm determined for the 500-mg weight was greater than the calculated value of 40.808 dynes/cm, resulting in a percent error of 1.70%. Taking into account the error of the weight, the results were not within the acceptance range of < 1%, and an additional calibration correction factor was needed:

F=S/Sa = F= 40.808 dynes/cm / 41.5 dynes/cm = 0.983 dynes/cm

The correction factor was factored into the determination of true surface tension.

Determination of the Surface Tension of Water: The experimental value of 73.7 dynes/cm determined for the distilled water compared well to the theoretical value of 72.75 dynes/cm, which yielded a percent difference of 1.34%. Since the experimental surface tension value of the distilled water was within 3% of the theoretical value, the instrument was verified to be operating correctly.

Determination of the Surface Tension of the Test Substance: The temperature during the definitive test ranged from 20.0 to 20.1°C. The true surface tension of the test substance was determined to be 73.4 ± 0.33 dynes/cm at 20.0°C as presented in the following table:

Since the surface tension was >60 dynes/cm, The test material is not considered to be surface active.

Conclusions:
The surface tension of the test substance, using OECD Guideline method 115, was 73.4 ± 0.3 dynes/cm at 20.0°C.
Executive summary:

The surface tension of the test substance, using OECD Guideline method 115, was 73.4 ± 0.3 dynes/cm at 20.0°C. Since the surface tension was >60 dynes/cm, the test substance is not considered to be surface active.
