Fatty acids, C5-9 esters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 68424-30-6) is assumed to be not harmful to aquatic organisms based on the results from short-term studies of different trophic levels (fish, daphnia, algae). Aquatic organisms did not show any effects up to the limit of the water solubility of the tested read-across substances (Fatty acids, C5-10, esters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 68424-31-7), Hexanoic acid, 3,5,5-trimethyl-, mixed hexaesters with dipentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS-No. 647028 -25 -9), 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid mixed tetraesters with PE and valeric acid (CAS-No. 131459-39-7)) in short-term tests for fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae (LC/EL50 > 100 mg/L, NOEC/ NOELR ≥ 100 mg/L).
Same observations could be reported for microorganisms, as no effects on respiration rate were observed after 3 h (EC50 > 1000 mg/L, NOEC ≥ 1000 mg/L) inrespiration inhibition tests with activated sludge for two read across substances (Hexanoic acid, 3,5,5-trimethyl-, mixed hexaesters with dipentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS-No. 647028 -25 -9), 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid mixed tetraesters with PE and valeric acid (CAS-No. 131459-39-7)).
In addition, one test result from a cell multiplication inhibition test with Pseudomonas putida according to Bringman and Kuehn (1980) for Fatty acids, C5-10, esters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 68424-31-7), determined also no inhibition on the growth (EC10 and EC50 (6h) > 10 mg/L (nominal)). As no toxicological effects on microorganisms are expected up to the water solubility for Fatty acids, C5-9 esters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 68424-30-6), a disturbance in the biodegradation process of a sewage treatment plant is not anticipated.
Valid tests on the long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates and fish are not provided. However a planned experimental study for long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates for Fatty acids, coco, triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS-No. 85566-29-6) together with a 15 day-long-term study with Daphnia magna (Low, 1996) for the Polyol ester Decanoic acid, ester with 2-ethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl) -1,3-propanediol octanoate (11138-60-6) will provide sufficient evidence for the chronic ecotoxicity of this substance. Fatty acids, coco, triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS-No. 85566-29-6) was chosen as test substance for a long-term test for aquatic invertebrates, as this substance contains a great percentage of C12-Fatty acids, which is well known as the most harmful Fatty acid. Based on acute toxicity data, the fish is not expected to be more sensitive than aquatic invertebrates. Therefore and for animal welfare, no further long-term test with aquatic organisms is required for Fatty acids, C5-9 esters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 68424-30-6).
