- Conclusions:
- Hop extract – beta acids, potassium salt is a UVCB substance, extracted and purified from a natural extract of hop cones, itself also a UVCB substance, obtained using either liquid or supercritical CO2, or ethanol, as extraction solvents. The principal components of the substance in question are listed in Table 1 of the attached report.
The results (Table 2 of the attached report) show that the principal homologues of the β-acids have log KOC values of 2.7 – 2.9, indicating “moderate sorption to soil/sediment, slow migration to ground water”*.
Although the substance contains the potassium salt of the hop β-acids, at pH 7 the substance will be in a resinous form and the β-acids will not dissolve well in water (see attached report). Therefore, the calculated values for the homologues of the β-acids are appropriate for this substance. The other components of the β-acid extract are mostly other resins (including oxidised bitter acids, which are estimated to behave in a similar fashion to the β-acids), and hop fats and waxes, which due to their hydrophobicity and large molecular structure, will adsorb more strongly to soil.
