Description of key information

Research has been performed on a number of chromium salts.

Chromium occurs naturally in water and is not considered to be accumulative. Algae appear to be the most sensitive organism for short term exposure (significant inhibition at 0.6 mg/l), but fish NOEC reported to be 0.15 mg/l for chronic exposure.

The UK Environment Agency has proposed a maximum limit and this is used to determine the PNEC Aquatic of 47 µg/l Cr 3+

With the known molecular weight, the following figures have been used for classification.

Acute fish toxicity : calculated to be 138 mg/l.

Chronic fish toxicity : calculated ca 0.7 mg/l

Acute Daphnia : calculated 77 mg/l

Daphnia reproduction : calculated 3.2 mg/l

Algal inhibition : calculated 1.4 mg/l
