The activated sludge sample was acquired from the Brazos River Valley Sewer Authority, Sugar Land, Texas as a grab sample. The activated sludge sample was maintained with aeration at 21-22° C before use.

Details on study design:
The test was conducted in Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) bottles with a mineral salts medium to support activated sludge growth. For the test substance 1.5 mg was applied to aluminum foil and placed in each replicate, resulting in a dose loading rate of 5 mg/L. The BOD bottles were then filled to a total volume of 300 mL with the prepared mineral media. The positive control, distilled aniline (13.1 mg) was added to 6.5 L of mineral media, and homogenized for approximately 2.5 hours before being added to the BOD bottles. For the Toxicity Reference Solution 1.5 mg of the test substance was applied to aluminum foil and placed in each replicate bottle. The bottles were then filled to a total volume of 300 mL with the prepared reference solution.

Ten labeled BOD bottles were prepared for the blank, 5 mg/L test substance and reference solutions (up to 5 sampling periods). Only six bottles were prepared for the toxicity reference solution. The blank and reference solutions were added to the respective bottles by siphoning from the lower quarter (not from the bottom) of the prepared solution containers. The Day 0 samples were examined for dissolved oxygen and the remaining bottles were stored in the dark and incubated at 21-22° C. Two BOD bottles for each solution were removed at each sampling interval (0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days). The oxygen in each duplicate set of solutions was measured using an YSI Model 5100 Dissolved Oxygen Meter and recorded at each interval.

Little or no biodegradation of the test substance was observed over the 28 day contact period. The maximum percent biodegradation recorded was 0.8% at 21-days of contact.

The reference substance aniline was biodegraded 74.4 % at day seven and a maximum biodegrdation of 93.9 % was observed at 28-days of sludge contact.

Executive summary:

The test substance, Bisphenol A, epichlorohydrin polymer, 2-methylimidazole condensate, was accessed for ready biodegradation potential in an O.E.C.D. 301D (Closed Bottle) study. A maximum biodegradation of 0.8 % was observed at 21 -days of sludge contact. Therefore, the test substance is not readily biodegradable under the conditions of the study.
