Additional information

1,1,1,2,3,3,3 -heptafluoroethane (HFC-227ea) is a colourless and odourless gas. Although the determination of melting and boiling points is not required for this substance in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the available data indicate that the substance has a melting point of - 129.5 ºC (Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical technology, 1991) and a boiling point of -18 to -16 ºC (Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical technology, 1991; National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme, Full public report Heptafluoropropane (hfc-227ea), 1999). Relative density of 1,1,1,2,3,3,3 -heptafluoropropane with respect to air, calculated in accordance with the ideal gas law, is 5.8.

In accordance with Annex XI and Chapter R.7 of REACH Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, the study on vapour pressure does not need to be conducted for substances with boiling point < 30 ºC, as these substances will have a vapour pressure above the limit of measurement (>1x105 Pa). However, available data indicate that the vapour pressure of 1,1,1,2,3,3,3 -heptafluoroethane varies between 54 kPa at -30 °C to 2936 kPa at 123 °C, supporting the above argument (Duan, 2001). The octanol/water partition coefficient (log Pow) is 2.29 (Abraham 2001), the water solubility is 0.23 g/l at 25 °C (Abraham 2001), calculated based on the substance Ostwald solubility.

Based on its structure, 1,1,1,2,3,3,3 -heptafluoroethane is s not expected to be surface active. The substance remains undissociated in water, as it does not contain chemical groups which can undergo dissociation.

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex X and/or with column 1 of REACH Annex IX and/or the REACH guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment (chapter R7.A), data on the particle size distribution, flash point, stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products, explosiveness and viscosity are not needed.

1,1,1,2,3,3,3 -heptafluoroethane has no flammable range and does not have to be classified as flammable in accordance with EU Directive 67/548/EEC and EU Classification, Labeling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008. As the substance is a gas with no flammable range, the data on auto flammability are not required in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII.

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII the study on explosive properties does not need to be conducted as there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in this substance. In addition according to REACH guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, methods are only applicable for liquids and solids.

Regarding oxidizing properties, in accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be conducted as the substance does not contain oxygen or halogen atoms chemically bonded to nitrogen or oxygen.
