There is no literature available about the effects of the reaction mass of NBPT and NPPT on terrestrial organisms. NBPT was considered to be a suitable analog to the reaction mass of NBPT and NPPT because NBPT is the main compound of the urease inhibitor. Further more, NBPT and NPPT have similar modes of action, differ structurally only in one methylene group and are subject to similar degradation and metabolism processes.

Two publications by Bremner et al. (1993) and Banarjee et al. (1988) are available, which are dealing with the toxic effects of the analog substance NBPT on soil microorganisms.

Bremner et al. investigated the inhibitory potential of NBPT on the nitrification of ammonium in soil. At test termination after 21 days, results show an EC50 of 50 mg/kg dry weight in Storden soil at 20°C.

Banerjee et al. examined whether urea fertilizer in combination with NBPT had a negative impact on the size of soil microbial biomass and concluded that this combination treatment showed no significant effect.
